I’ve been reading a blog that makes me uncomfortable. It reveals incredibly personal things about its writer and just tells too much. I’ve read stuff like that before and didn’t care, but I tangentially know this person, and she has no idea I’m reading it. I know her tangentially enough that it would be weird if she found out, weirder still if she found out I was referred by a third-party who knows her even more tangentially. When I saw her the other day, I felt like I was interfering with an experiment, like I was an actor in The Truman Show, interacting with Jim Carrey when the producer said not to. I mean, I say it every time someone shuts down a blog that gets “discovered”: if you don’t want people to know you slept with your boss, don’t put it on Blogspot. Still, I feel like a peeping Tom. <\/p>\n

\"Dan<\/a>Our eighth grade social studies teacher loved giving creative assignments, and I loved doing them. For a group presentation on cavemen, I played Danahue, questioning my guests, running through the audience, looking skyward and crying, “Caller, are you there?!” My most notorious moment came during an assignment on ancient Sumeria. We set up a desk at the front of the classroom, my co-anchor and I sat behind it, and I put on a deep newscaster’s voice:<\/p>\n

“I’m Dan Tobin and I’m not wearing any pants. Tonight, our top story in Phoenicia…”<\/p>\n

Completely ripped off from Kentucky Fried Movie, but the teacher loved it to the point that he made me repeat the first line when we finished. He laughed again, we got an A, and my friends and I celebrated.<\/p>\n

But that’s not the kind of stuff that makes you popular with your classmates. Or gets you dates. Or wins you school elections. It is memorable, though, and it tends to follow you out of the classroom. And into gym class and around recess and after school. Maybe for years. (Perhaps even into blog comments…) And until I had a moment of clarity years later, I acted like the Fresh Prince’s mom — if they’re laughing you don’t need ‘em, ’cause they’re not good friends. Tease me all you want, that just means you don’t get the joke. <\/p>\n
