Roland materialized out of the gloom. He moved as quietly as ever, but he looked tired and preoccupied. \u201cI thought maybe you two fell into a quickpit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA few days, then a few more, then a few more.\u201d Eddie looked at the branch he had just picked up and threw it aside disgustedly. I\u2019m starting to sound just like him, he thought. And yet he knew that he was only speaking the truth. \u201cMaybe we\u2019d see that their spring is getting silted up, and it wouldn\u2019t be polite to go until we\u2019d dug it out for them. But why stop there when we could take another couple of weeks and build a jackleg waterwheel, right? They\u2019re old, and have no more foot.\u201d He glanced at Roland, and his voice was tinged with reproach. \u201cI tell you what\u2014when I think of Bill and Till there stalking a herd of wild buffalo, I get the shivers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been doing it a long time,\u201d Roland said, \u201cand I imagine they could show us a thing or two. They\u2019ll manage. Meantime, let\u2019s get that wood\u2014it\u2019s going to be a chilly night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Jake wasn\u2019t done with it yet. He was looking closely\u2014almost sternly\u2014at Eddie. \u201cYou\u2019re saying we could never do enough for them, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eddie stuck out his lower lip and blew hair off his forehead. \u201cNot exactly. I\u2019m saying it would never be any easier to leave than it was today. Harder, maybe, but no easier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt still doesn\u2019t seem right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They reached the place that would become, once the fire was lit, just another campsite on the road to the Dark Tower. Susannah had eased herself out of her chair and was lying on her back with her hands behind her head, looking up at the stars. Now she sat up and began to arrange the wood in the way Roland had shown her months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roland squatted beside the fire Susannah had built, produced his flint and steel, and began to flash sparks into the kindling. Soon small flames were growing amid the twigs and dried handfuls of grass. \u201cI can\u2019t answer those questions,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish I could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
